Michael Beaton, P.E., is the Vice President of Certification Services, Building Products, at Intertek, a testing, inspection and certification organization. As the leader of Intertek certification services, Mike is responsible for outreach to industry associations and to the code community. In addition to his responsibilities as a technical reviewer of Intertek’s research reports, he is also responsible for further developing Intertek’s technical services for new sectors of the building product industry. Mike has over 25 years of experience in the building industry, working with manufacturers and industries to address issues of code compliance.

The Role of Testing and Certification in the Built Environment
Mike’s presentation will address several topics in both general fire testing and the application of this testing to the built environment. His general topics will include an explanation of the standards used, a review of the building components required to be tested, an explanation of the various types of equipment used and measurements taken during the tests, a comparison of material vs. assembly testing, and will define what a rating is and what it tells us about the material or building component. Mike will explain any differences between what his role is in testing compared to UL testing and the role and purpose of certification and the general times it takes for the certification process. He will review AMMRs, engineering judgements and proprietary testing, and which approach may be most beneficial to assess construction elements.
